The first Cold War was accompanied by a particularily intense propoganda campaign between the two camps.  Each side side sought maximally to denigrate the other. in which side sought maximally to denigrate the other.

The West sought to berate the U.S.S.R. for its “totalitarian qualities”  and so establish a homology between the nature of Soviet Society and Nazi Germany on the grounds that both were repressive and warlike.
